Endometrial Ablation

This is an operation to obliterate as much of the uterine lining as possible. Its aim is to reduce menstrual flow and cause very light periods.

Imagine a large lawn – mowing it results in a pile of grass.

Now – blowtorch the grass

Hopefully when you mow, all you will get is dust.

That is the aim of Endometrial Ablation – when you have a period, it is either very light or non-existent.

The technique I employ utilises the Novasure device.

This is a day case operation and women do experience low abdominal ‘period-like' pain for the first few days. A watery bloody discharge persists for 2-4 weeks.

I will discuss the option of inserting a Mirena device at the end of the procedure.

Recovery is usually similar to those having a  D&C Hysteroscopy

Endometrial Ablation is only for those women who do not desire future pregnancies and it is unsafe to conceive after this procedure.

A Tubal Ligation may be recommended / performed at the same time if your partner has not had a vasectomy or you have not previously had a Tubal Ligation.
